M.Sc. in Chemistry is a classic yet exciting practical course intended to prepare the students for PhD studies or to broaden their research experience and knowledge of chemistry. The knowledge also prepares them for a career in vivid chemical industries. The proverb “where there is muck there is money” holds particularly true for the chemical industry.
M.Sc. Chemistry at IAR is a 2 year (4 semesters) duration program. This course offers specialization in organic, analytical and industrial chemistry. Organic chemistry specialization encompasses the topics of catalysis, organometallic chemistry, the chemistry of polyenes, chemo-, regio- and enantioselective synthesis, heterocyclic chemistry, fluoro containing compounds and NMR and other spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. Furthermore, this course deals with life and life processes associated with nearly every aspect of our existence. All the key molecules of life, such as DNA, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates are organic compounds. Analytical specialization, on the other hand, includes courses on different analytical tools, techniques and different instrumental applications. This industrially relevant course provides the students with a strong background in the theory of analytical techniques and gives them the ability to apply these techniques to complex analytical problems. With analytical techniques and instrumentation becoming ever more sophisticated, there is an increasing demand for qualified analytical chemists.
From this year onwards, owing to its importance, an M.Sc. specialized course in Industrial Chemistry is being offered at IAR. The economic growth of a country relies on the manufacturing industries. Among the industries, the chemical industry deals with the commercial production of chemicals and related products from raw materials. It enables mankind in the exploration of chemistry for the utilization of materials and energy. No wonder, the chemical industries decide the overall growth and development of a nation in the fields of food production, health and hygiene, and clothing. The chemical industry is responsible for the production of thousands of chemicals worldwide and has registered its importance in pharmaceutical companies, polymer processing, petrochemical industries and in the food and beverage industries.
Hence, an M.Sc. specialized course in Industrial Chemistry is of paramount significance. The purpose of this course is to bridge the gap between classical chemistry and the chemistry being applied to the industries. The research-based innovative teaching strategies implemented by the esteemed faculties of IAR will enable the students to find potent employability in the varied chemical industries. Moreover, the M.Sc. students will get the opportunity to engage themselves in industrial projects at various pioneer industries in Gujarat and other parts of the country. Apart from the core courses offered under each specialization, several elective papers are floated each semester such as nanoscience, quality control and quality assurance, computational chemistry and chemical software. These courses are designed to inculcate interest in these highly fascinating and desirable branches of chemistry. To conclude, in today’s competitive environment, this course enhances the appropriate skill and knowledge that are required in the industries, can give an upper hand to the students, as compared to those having routine mundane classic education.
