The Department of Biotechnology and Bioengineering brings together all the ingredients to advance knowledge of how life works and apply the knowledge to improve our quality of life. Our work is well recognized nationally and internationally.
The Department encompasses the full breadth and depth of the disciplines across all biological sciences. Students and faculty explore living systems at every scale from proteins and enzymes to plant and developmental biology. Understanding the mechanisms of the living systems is the first step toward finding solutions to our health challenges. Our faculty are leaders in a range of these disciplines and continue to expand research in emerging areas of the biological sciences from immunology to metabolic engineering.
Our undergraduate and postgraduate students experience active-learning with exposure to case studies at the forefront of the disciplines. The Department brings together researchers who are advancing knowledge at every scale from molecules to systems. Our faculty’s internationally leading research ranges from cancer biology and engineering important molecules, to vaccines and neutraceuticals.

A hearty welcome to the Department of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, IAR, Gandhinagar. The department offers UG, PG and Ph.D. degree programs in different disciplines of Biotechnology and Bioengineering.
Our degree programs are unique and comprehensive designed to impart theoretical and practical training encompassing all the major contemporary subjects in Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Our intensive training confers the student to be competitive for higher studies and to cater to the needs of bio-industries, teaching and research. The curriculum is taught by distinguished faculty combining academic excellence and real-world experience with dedication and commitment. This will help our students to widen their knowledge base in multiple disciplines to broaden their job opportunities.
All our faculty members have excellent academic credentials having been educated and trained in cutting edge research at reputed Indian and International institutes/universities. Hence, our theoretical and experimental training is flavoured with a tinge of research and inquisitive orientation.
The students will have ample opportunities for exposure to research directly in the laboratories of the faculty members and are encouraged to undertake various research projects within the department as well as to apply for internship/visit in other research Institutes. I hope with sincere efforts by the faculty members and students, this department will be one of the leading departments in the field of Biotechnology.
