Program Overview

M.Sc Materials Science is one of the most popular and an interdisciplinary academic program which prepares students for a career not only in academic teaching/research or govt jobs but also creates huge opportunities in ever-growing Materials industries.

The four-semester MSc Materials Science degree course at IAR, Gandhinagar provides a combination of comprehensive Materials Science and Technology. It covers advanced research and application-oriented aspects of modern materials science and offers a solid basis for deepening the scientific knowledge and its practical application in academic as well as in industries. The first two semesters of the course will cover core subjects including Nanoscience/Nanotechnology, Composites science and technology, Materials processing and characterization, Semiconductor and thin-film technology as well as Macromolecular polymer chemistry. There will also be a choice of optional modules from the existing courses of Physics, Chemistry or Engineering stream. The final semester is reserved for the preparation of the Master’s thesis, which can be completed in collaboration with research institutes or industrial partners. Expert invited lectures, seminars, Industrial tours, conferences and hands-on workshops are also an integral part of this program.

The course is designed for students who want to acquire knowledge, concepts and research skills in advanced materials science and technology in order to seek a research/technology development career in materials science. This Master programme will equip students with the skills required to join a wide variety of industries in the capacity of materials scientist/specialist, or continue education at a PhD level both nationally or overseas.
