Microbiology is the study of microbes and their interaction with living organisms. An undergraduate degree in microbiology has applications in the field of medical science, industry, pharmacy, biochemical engineering, molecular biology, research and education and similar fields.
B.Sc. Microbiology is a 3-year program spread over six semesters. The students are expected to earn a minimum of 120 credits in six semesters. The students who take up studies in microbiology will get practical experience in genetics, bacteriology, medical microbiology and cellular life.
The University undertakes a choice based credit system laid down by University Grant Commission. Students choose Core and elective subjects in Chemistry and Microbiology. They are also expected to choose additionally one subject from Botany or Zoology. The students are also expected to complete four skill enhancement and ability enhancement courses like English and Environmental Sciences.
A continuous evaluation system is followed to assess understanding of the subject. Internal assessment shall be conducted through midterm examinations, assignments and class tests. End of the term Final semester theory and practical examinations are conducted by the external examiners. The minimum qualification for enrolment for the program is qualifying Senior Secondary School examination. Lateral entry in second, third is allowed for the program after appropriate credit transfer.
